Safavids in Venetian and European Sources book /Cild: 9 Ahmad Guliyev 9 2022 The emergence of the Safavid Empire in … The emergence of the Safavid Empire in the early sixteenth century marked a significant change in the geopolitics of the Middle East. This momentous change coincided with the widening of Ottoman expansion eastward and the exploration by European powers, especially by Venice, of the possibilities of forming alliances against the Ottomans with the involvement of the Safavids. Thus, Ottoman threat and commercial interests contributed to the emergence and development of diplomatic, cultural, and trade relations between the Republic of Venice and the Safavid Empire, which lasted until the end of the seventeenth century. Drawing on the documents from the Venetian State Archives and other contemporary sources, this book focuses mainly on some aspects of Safavid diplomacy, including the language of the Safavid polity, the role of European subjects as interpreters for the shahs, material and visual characteristics of Safavid diplomatic letters to Venice, the attitude of the Safavids towards resident diplomacy, the reception of the European envoys in the Safavid court and Europeans’ perception of Safavid diplomatic practices, as well as the characteristics of the Safavid embassies to Venice. We have tried to explain the role of Turkish as a language of diplomacy and communication in Safavid-Venetian encounters. We have also attempted to explore briefly how the Venetians distinguished Safavid subjects according to their ethno-linguistic affiliations. Finally, we examine the Ottoman factor in Safavid-Venetian relations in order to establish to what extent, if any, the Ottomans had an impact on the overall character of Safavid-Venetian relations. Venice’s Ceremonial Treatment of the Ottoman and Safavid Envoys in Comparative Perspective OTAM(Ankara Üniversitesi Osmanlı Tarihi Araştırma ve Uygulama Merkezi Dergisi) /N: 48 səh: 85-109 Ahmad Guliyev 3 2020 Taking a comparative perspective and drawing on … Taking a comparative perspective and drawing on the documents from the Venetian State Archives, the paper attempts to examine a ceremonial treatment of the Ottoman and Safavid diplomats in Venice. Both the Ottoman and Safavid envoys usually were graciously received in Venice. However, the degree of the Venetian hospitality was subject to changes and varied in accordance to the importance of the incoming mission and overall nature of its relations with the Ottomans and Safavids. It appears from the receptions of the Ottoman and Safavid diplomats in Venice that during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, the ceremonial positions of the sultan’s envoys were equal or mostly above that of the Qızılbaş representatives. As it is evident from the Safavid Asad bey’s case in 1600, in its treatment of the Safavid envoys, Venetian government pursued a cautious policy and tried not to antagonize the Ottomans. Furthermore, the Ottoman factor had enduring impact both on the nature and on the dynamics of the Safavid-Venetian relations Daha çox

The article sheds light on the role religion played in the determination of a Shah’s choice of a gift to the Doge. Furthermore, this article examines how the diplomatic gifts from the Safavid rulers were viewed and conceived in Venice. Using a comparative perspective, the article explores the differences between the Safavid gift-giving strategies towards Venice and Ottomans. Venice’s Knowledge of the Qizilbash – The Importance of the Role of the Venetian Baili in Intelligence-Gathering on the Safavids Acta Orientalia Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae / Akadémiai Kiadó /Cild: 75 /N: 1 səh: 79-97 Ahmad Guliyev 2 2022 While the subject of the Venetian espionage … While the subject of the Venetian espionage in the Ottoman empire has received scholarly attention, no attempt has been made to study the baili’s intelligence-gathering activities on Safavid issues in a systematic way. Through the close scrutiny of baili dispatches and other relevant materials of the Venetian State archives, this paper examines the role of the Venetian diplomats in Istanbul in information-gathering on the Safavids. It demonstrates that the baili used various techniques, particularly gifting, bribery, and information exchange with the Ottoman officials in order to collect and transmit to Venice a wide range of information on Ottomans’ arch-rivals, the Safavids. The ‘regifting’ of luxury objects and exotic goods across physical and cultural boundaries was a common practice in the early modern period. Safavid and Mughal rulers mainly regifted precious items of a rare nature to impress their counterparts. The paper examines the intermediary role of the Safavids in the circulation of objects between India, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire. Daha çox

The Significance of the Number ‘Nine’for the States and Societies in the Early Modern Turkic Empires Türk Dünyasi Tarihi / Türk Tarih Kurumu /Cild: 10 səh: 39-54 Ahmad Guliyev 1 2022 Turkic peoples have considered the number nine … Turkic peoples have considered the number nine as bearing a special mystic significance. In accordance with the ancient Turkic customary practice, the gifts were presented in nines. One of the leading tribes of the Turks was known as the ‘Tokuz Oguz’, the ‘Nine Oghuz’. The mysticism of the number ‘nine’is used in The Book of Dedem Korkut. The eleventh-century Turkish poet from Central Asia, Yusuf Balasagunlu, a writer of the epic Kutadgu bilig (The Knowledge of How to Become Happy) compared the sunrise to the appearance of the ruler before whom nine gold-colored banners were carried1. Abu’l Ghazi, an author of Shajarah-iturk divided his work into nine chapters because ‘wise men have said:“nothing must exceed the number nine”. Ottoman, Mughal and Safavid chroniclers often mention of “nine skies”,“nine vaults of heaven”. The number ‘nine’also played an important role in gift exchanges: it was customary to give presents in groups of nine. Gift-giving and tribute payment in denominations of nine were also recorded by both local and European authors of the late medieval and early modern periods. Daha çox

The Ottoman fortification of Ganja and provincial administration of Ganja-Qarabagh province in the late Sixteenth century book A Guliyev 1 2016 Fortress as a tool for the implementation … Fortress as a tool for the implementation of Ottoman military power was necessary for the upkeep and security of the Ottoman rule in Azerbaijan. Following its capture in 1588, Ganja was among the main towns of Azerbaijan fortified by the Ottomans. The primary aim of the fortification of Ganja was to maintain Ottoman rule in former Safavid beylerbeyi of Qarabagh, in the territories of which Ottomans established the vilâyet-i Gence Karabağ with seven sanjaks (districts). After fortifications, Ganja became one of the major garrison towns on the eastern frontier of the Ottomans. Apart from its military functions, the fortress served as the administrative seat of Ganja-Qarabagh province until it fell into the hands of the Safavids after the siege of 1606. In 1615, Ganja fortress, one of the examples of the late sixteenth century Ottoman military architecture in Azerbaijan, was subjected to destruction by the order of Shah Abbas I. Daha çox

This paper attempts to shed light on how Europeans viewed and interpreted diplomatic encounters between the Safavids and the Mughals. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, unlike the major European powers, neither the Safavid nor the Mughal empires maintained permanent embassies abroad. They relied on temporary embassies dispatched for a particular mission who would return home upon its completion. It was also the case with the Ottomans. 1 This practice of the Safavid court was observed by Italian Pietro Della Valle:“He [Shah Abbas I] does not maintain his ordinary ambassador at any court, but sends extraordinary envoys when he needs to have talks with any of the rulers”. 2 The unwillingness of both the Safavid and Mughal rulers to establish permanent … Daha çox

In particular, it will reconstruct the itineraries of the journeys of the Safavid delegates to Venice, analyse the challenges and difficulties of long-distance travel experienced by them and the impact of the Ottoman factor on both the Safavid and Venetian envoys’ travel planning and trajectories. The paper reveals that the first Safavid trade mission to Venice was sent in 1597 and not in 1600, as previously known in the historiography. We will shed light on the social status of the Safavid envoys and clarify the role and duties of thegarak-yaraqs (purveyors) of the Safavid Royal Household among them. We will examine the impact of the overall character of the Safavid-Ottoman relations both on the size of the missions and the intensity of the diplomatic and trade contacts between the Republic of Venice and the Safavid Empire. From the Doge to the Shah: Venetian diplomatic gifts for the Safavid Empire Revista istorică / Institutul de Istorie Nicolae Iorga /Cild: 31 /N: 3-4 səh: 213–224 Ahmad Guliyev 0 2020 Gift-giving was an important feature of early … Gift-giving was an important feature of early modern diplomacy and as a tangible expression of goodwill and generosity, it helped build ties and maintain relationships. The gift was not only a sign of goodwill. As means of symbolic communication, diplomatic gifts conveyed political messages. Apart from facilitating diplomatic encounters, diplomatic gifts revealed the relative status of states as well as their political, economic, and cultural intentions. Furthermore, the rulers used such gifts to display their power and wealth. The emergence of the Safavid Empire in the early sixteenth century coincided with the sustained eastward expansion of the Ottoman Empire, and the European powers, especially Venice, explored the possibilities of forming an alliance against the Ottomans with the involvement of the Safavids. The Ottoman threat and mutual commercial interests contributed to the emergence and development of diplomatic, cultural, and trade relations between the Republic of Venice and the Safavid Empire. The Safavid-Venetian diplomatic relationship was generally characterized by its infrequent nature and only the reign of Shah Abbas I (r. 1587–1629) witnessed a relative increase in diplomatic contacts between these states. „The Safavid-Ottoman Gift Exchanges Through the Eyes of the Venetians “ Hilâl, Studi Turci e Ottomani səh: 61-70 Ahmad Gulijev 2 0 Safavid Empire had much more extensive diplomatic … Safavid Empire had much more extensive diplomatic relations with Turco-Muslim polities, particularly with the Ottomans, compared to the European states. Safavids and Ottomans interacted with each other actively, managing their relationships through relatively regular exchanges of envoy missions. The importance that Safavids placed on their relationship with the Ottoman was reflected in the values of the gifts made to the Sultan. Subsequently, the value, quantity, and variety of gifts sent to their neighbouring powers was greater than those sent to European countries. Both Safavids and Ottomans paid attention to variety and quantity in mutual gift-giving. Sources from both sides record numerous diplomatic gift exchanges. 1 The most telling examples of diplomatic exchanges of gifts occurred when peace negotiations were at stake or when a new ruler ascended the throne. In addition to the local sources, the Venetian baili in Istanbul also provided information on the nature of the gifts presented by the Safavid envoys to the Ottoman sultan. The baili not only mentioned instances of gift-giving, but also gave detailed lists of the Safavid gifts. 2 Daha çox
