| Investigating cultural and socioeconomic change at the beginning of the Pottery Neolithic in the southern Caucasus: the 2013 excavations at Hacı Elamxanlı Tepe, Azerbaijan | Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research / The American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR) /Cild: 374 /N: 1 səh: 1-28 | Yoshihiro Nishiaki, Chie Akashi, Saiji Arai, Farhad Guliyev, Seiji Kadowaki, Valeh Alakbarov, Takehiro Miki, Shahin Salimbayov | 57 | 2015 |
Recent research on the Neolithic period of …
Recent research on the Neolithic period of the southern Caucasus situates the emergence of an established food-producing economy at the beginning of the sixth millennium b.c. This article reports on the 2013 season of excavations at Hacı Elamxanlı Tepe, western Azerbaijan, currently one of the oldest sites providing evidence of early agriculture, which represents the earliest stage of the Shomutepe-Shulaveri culture. Excavations yielded a rich archaeological record that confirmed the intensive exploitation of domesticated cereals and animals over a period ranging from ca. 5950 to 5800 cal b.c. Excavated artifact assemblages have a distinct character, differing from those of later settlements, indicating rapid cultural changes in the first half of the sixth millennium b.c. The assemblages also comprised a small number of elements reminiscent of the Pottery Neolithic traditions from the eastern wing of the Fertile …

The factors and dynamics that initiated the Neolithisation process in the South Caucasus between the very end of the 7th and the beginning of the 6th millennium BCE are still unclear and hotly debated. It is within this framework that the excavations at Kiçik Tepe, in the middle Kura river valley of Western Azerbaijan, aim to offer new data and new perspectives on the complex interplay of environmental, social and cultural factors that contributed to this process. Excavations at Kiçik Tepe uncovered two main phases of occupation consisting of circular buildings dating to the first centuries of the 6th millennium. Architectural remains allowed us to highlight an evolutionary architectural trajectory hinting at social and productive changes in the role and structure of the households. The subsistence strategies that rely on species domesticated elsewhere show at once a series of specificities highlighting adaptation to the local …

This article presents the results of the vibrational spectroscopic and chemometric analyses of Neolithic pottery remains excavated in Göytepe (Azerbaijan), a typical Shomutepe-Shulaveri culture settlement. Fifty-five pottery fragments, that were unearthed in the excavations of Göytepe during the 2009–2013 years, were investigated using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and micro-Raman spectroscopy. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) was used as a complementary technique. The firing-temperature and -conditions were inferred from the mineral phases obtained from the vibrational spectra of the samples and were estimated to be between 600 °C and 750 °C in oxidizing atmosphere. As chemometrics, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) followed by Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), were applied to the FTIR spectral data, in order to examine the possible classification of those findings, and to extract the most …

The Neolithic settlement of Göytepe (6th millennium …
The Neolithic settlement of Göytepe (6th millennium cal BC) is of great importance for studying all stages of the Neolithic pottery not only of Azerbaijan, but also that of the Southern Caucasus. Here, we analyze pottery assemblage from the 4th building level at this site as an example of Neolithic ceramics of the Kura River valley, Southern Caucasus. We focused on the technological and morphological development of pottery from 14 building levels at Göytepe. This paper presents the results of the extensive study of pottery samples found in the 4th building level during archaeological excavations in 2017. Each pottery group was described and compared according to its technical features. The obtained results were compared with previous studies of other contemporaneous sites, to discuss the origin and technological development of Neolithic pottery in the Southern Caucasus. The conclusion was made about the independent development of the Shulaveri-Shomu culture at its early stage, and about the infl uence of the intercultural contacts at later stages.

The article is devoted to the official UK course towards Germany unification from Ottawa meeting in February 1990 to May–September 1990, when the course was realized during diplomatic negotiations «2+ 4». The author on the basis of declassified sources of Foreign Office, using comparative, issue–chronological methods states that British course towards the unity of the FRG and the GDR consists: the support of the membership of a united Germany in the NATO with refusal to deploy on the territory of the former GDR non–German armed forces; demands from the united Germany to guarantee the existing borders, the support of the East Germany entrance into the EEC. Despite skeptical attitude of M. Thatcher regarding German unification, there was transformation from her delaying tactics of unification to help in resolving problematic issues with the Soviet Union and Poland.

Archaeological surveys around G๖ytepe were undertaken during …
Archaeological surveys around G๖ytepe were undertaken during the 2011, 2012, and 2013 summer excavation seasons. The first preliminary results of the 2011 field season are presented in this chapter. Prior to our investigations, Ideal Narimanov conducted general reconnaissance surveys in this region in the 1960s and 1970s (Narimanov 1987). He reported many prehistoric tepe (mound) sites spread across all regions of Azerbaijan and provided us with detailed information on the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods (referred to as “Aeneolithic” by Narimanov). It is of particular note that he sufficiently described several mound sites in the Tovuz region, along with the excavation results at important sites like Shomutepe and Toiretepe. After Narimanov’s work, the northwestern region of Azerbaijan extending from Agstafa to Shamkir and further south to the Gedebey region was extensively surveyed by Bertille Lyonnet and Farhad Guliyev from 2006 to 2007. Although their research emphasized prehistoric mining activities, they identified a number of hitherto unknown archaeological sites distributed in western Azerbaijan (Lyonnet and Guliyev 2009). On the basis of their work, our survey projects were planned for more restricted areas in the vicinity of G๖ytepe. While we proceeded to excavate the Neolithic settlement of G๖ytepe, our goal was to find contemporaneous or earlier settlements in order to understand the evolution of the Shomutepe cultural entity and later developments in the region. The surveyed area encompasses approximately 200 km2 within a radius of ca. 15 km from G๖ytepe (Fig. 8.1).The site is situated near the modern town of …

The emergence of knowledge is believed firstly …
The emergence of knowledge is believed firstly started with the transition to agricultural civilization. People's moving from hunter-gathering into sedentary occupation has changed their way of life and, accordingly, the origins of scientific knowledge have grad-ually emerged. Human values and pleasures have changed from culture to culture, from time to time and from person to person and mankind has developed technology to meet the needs that it perceives as its own, not the basic necessities that nature has enacted. There-fore, there is widespread agreement that the Prehistoric knowledge is based entirely on experiment. With the development of society, natural phenomena have begun to be exam-ined in more detailed and thus a solid knowledge accumulation has emerged. The undeni-able fact is that today, all levels of cultural development in the world have been made possible by the achievements of …

Some Neolithic pottery fragments excavated in Göytepe-Azerbaijan were investigated using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), micro-Raman, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and statistical chemometric techniques. The firing-temperature and-conditions were inferred from the mineral phases obtained from the FTIR and micro-Raman spectra of the samples. The XRD results confirmed the mineralogical composition determined by FTIR and micro-Raman analyses. Depending on the spectroscopic results, the firing temperatures of the investigated potteries were estimated to be between 600 oC and 750 oC in oxidizing atmosphere. As the chemometric methods, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) were applied to FTIR spectral data in order to show similarities and dissimilarities of the samples and to extract the most discriminant features.
