Archaeological and archaeogenetic evidence points to the …
Archaeological and archaeogenetic evidence points to the Pontic–Caspian steppe zone between the Caucasus and the Black Sea as the crucible from which the earliest steppe pastoralist societies arose and spread, ultimately influencing populations from Europe to Inner Asia. However, little is known about their economic foundations and the factors that may have contributed to their extensive mobility. Here, we investigate dietary proteins within the dental calculus proteomes of 45 individuals spanning the Neolithic to Greco-Roman periods in the Pontic–Caspian Steppe and neighbouring South Caucasus, Oka–Volga–Don and East Urals regions. We find that sheep dairying accompanies the earliest forms of Eneolithic pastoralism in the North Caucasus. During the fourth millennium bc, Maykop and early Yamnaya populations also focused dairying exclusively on sheep while reserving cattle for traction and other …

Although many excavations have been carried out on sites of the Kura-Araxes culture (3500-2400 BC) in the Southern Caucasus since 1940, no overall study has been made about the funerary practices of the populations. This article presents a synthesis of the information by combining earlier and more recent excavation data with a new viewpoint, the archaeothanatology methods. Across the whole region, 111 sites with burials have been discovered. The burials can be divided into six categories: cists, tombs built in various forms, horseshoe-shaped tombs, pit tombs without surface evidence, tombs indicated on the surface by small heaps of stones, and kurgans. Maps of the sites distribution were established according to the different types of tombs identified and the ways in which the deceased were deposited. The use of archaeothanatological methods provides a better comprehension of the body deposits and …

Kurgans dating to the beginning of the …
Kurgans dating to the beginning of the 4th millennium BC were recently excavated at Soyuq Bulaq in western Azerbaijan. It shows that this type of burial construction in Transcaucasia started more than a thousand year earlier than previously accepted. Relations with different regions, especially the Urmia area and Northern Mesopotamia (“pre-Uruk expansion” or Late Chalcolithic 2–3) have been pointed out. One of the kurgans was especially rich in material. Questions are raised about the ritual with probable secondary burials.В 2005 г.

The Ganja Region Kurgan Archaeological Project (GaRKAP) …
The Ganja Region Kurgan Archaeological Project (GaRKAP) is a joint Azero-Italian project that aims at investigating the spread of the tradition of burying the dead in large funerary chambers covered with circular tumuli—that is, kurgans—in the southern Caucasus during a period ranging from the fourth to the first millennium BCE. It is in this region that large numbers of kurgans, dating to the Early Bronze Age (that is, the Kura-Araxes period) through to the Iron Age, have been identified. In particular, the funerary tumuli dated to the Kura-Araxes period reveal a common mortuary custom of multiple human depositions inside a large chamber that is burnt at the conclusion of ritual practices; the Late Bronze/Early Iron Age burials, on the other hand, are smaller in size and usually present single or double human depositions, furnished with bronze objects and, in some circumstances, the skeletal remains of equids. This …

This paper presents the results of a pilot study that combines findings from satellite remote sensing analyses and an intensive interdisciplinary survey conducted in November 2021 on kurgans along the Kurekçay Valley, in western Azerbaijan. Through the integration of various methods, including historical and contemporary satellite and aerial imagery analysis, topographic mapping and geophysical prospections, this research remotely maps and quantifies the density, size, morphology and distribution of the burial mounds in the area. Unlike previous studies focusing solely on individual burial mounds, this investigation adopts a broader approach by contextualizing the kurgans within their respective landscapes. The results contribute to a deeper understanding of the physical and symbolic aspects and relationships of these structures, providing valuable insights into the enduring burial practices that shaped the …

The Baku Tbilisi Ceyhan oil pipeline (BTC) …
The Baku Tbilisi Ceyhan oil pipeline (BTC) was built over a three-year period between 2003 and 2005, and was preceded by an archaeological programme that began in 2001 and finally finished in 2009 with the completion of a series of reports detailing the analysis of the data from the excavations, and subsequent studies. The work entailed a range of activities, some of which were new developments in Azerbaijan, such as the use of GPS recording and digital images, together with the use of aerial photography and satellite remote sensing. Yet, despite this, the most effective tool was found to be the presence on the ground of hard-working, knowledgeable, archaeologically-trained staff.

The GaRKAP (Ganja Region Kurgan Archaeological Project) …
The GaRKAP (Ganja Region Kurgan Archaeological Project) international project in western Azerbaijan, which started in 2018, from 2021 aimed to investigate the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age settlement of Tava Tepe. This site is situated along the Kura River valley, within the present-day Aǧstafa district. During the initial three seasons, led by CAMNES (Center for Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies), the University of Catania, and the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, two main phases of occupation (ie, Phase I and II) were identified at the site. The purpose of this preliminary report is to describe the archaeological evidence from Tava Tepe which at this moment are dated respectively to Late Bronze Age (Phase I) and Iron Age I-II (Phase II). In particular, during the last season, new evidence from the southern side of Tava Tepe highlighted the presence of a circular ceremonial building with a pottery hoard that has preliminarily been dated to the Late Bronze Age period. The second level of occupation at the site (Phase II) is instead characterized by rectilinear architecture and a hut that includes areas dedicated to productive activities. At this stage, the small settlement of Tava Tepe presents for both phases intriguing data which appear consistent with the ritual ideology of the southern Caucasus between the end of the second millennium and the beginning of the first millennium BCE.

The richness of gold in the Caucasus …
The richness of gold in the Caucasus region is legendary. Since the second half of the 3rd millennium, extensive use of gold is evident through finds in kurgans of the Martkopi-Bedeni stage of the late Kura-Araxes period. A later highlight is the prehistoric gold work of the Trialeti culture in the first half of the 2nd millennium BC demonstrating filigree and granulation techniques. Small beads of the Leilatepe culture from Soyuq Bulaq in Azerbaijan dating to the 4th millennium BC are unique and exceptional examples from Chalcolithic times. A major question arises as to the provenance of the raw materials. Were the rich gold occurrences of the Lesser Caucasus and the southern Greater Caucasus already exploited for local supply at that time, or were gold or finished artefacts imported from other regions? Field work and analytical projects were conducted in recent years in order to characterize the geochemical fingerprint of natural and artefact gold in Transcaucasia (Hauptmann, Klein 2009; Hauptmann et al. 2010; Jansen, Stöllner, Courcier 2014), and for Armenian gold occurrences (Wolf et al. 2011, 2013; Wolf, Kunze 2014).The analytical investigation of archaeological gold artefacts is a complicated task given their great cultural value and careful curation. Provenance studies of gold artefacts aiming to trace their raw material sources through chemical analyses are an intensively debated topic in archaeometallurgy (Guerra, Calligaro 2003; Watling et al. 1994; Tamas, Baron, Cauuet 2009; Pernicka 2014).

Azərbaycan arxeologiya elmində son illər əldə olunan nəaliyyətlər digər arxeoloji mədəniyyətlərlə yanaşı Xocalı-Gədəbəy mədəniyyəti abidələrinin tədqiqinə də oz töhvəsini vermişdir. Belə ki, son üç ildə ancaq Azərbaycanın qərb bölgəsində təkcə bəhs olunan dövrə aid onlarla arxeoloji abidə müəyyən edilmiş və onlardan bir neçəsində əsaslı arxeoloji tədqiqat işləri apanlmışdır. Qeydə alınan arxeoloji abidələrdə istər kəşfıyyat, istərsə əsaslı tədqiqat işləri aparılarkən digər maddi mədəniyyət nümunələri ilə yanaşı kəmiyyət etibarı ilə zəngin olan metalişləmə sənətkarlığı məhsulları da aşkar olunub.Tədqiq olunan metalişləmə sənətkarlığı məmulatlan içərisində, Şəmkir su elektrik stansiyası tikilərkən böyük bir hissəsi Kür çayının altmda qalmış Hacı-vəlilər nekropolundan tapılmış tunc əşyalar özünəməxsusluğu ilə diqqəti cəlb edir. Hacıvəlilər nekropolunda apanlan kəşfiyyat xarakterli tədqiqatlar zamanı, anbarda suyun səviyyəsinin enib-qalxması nəticəsində üstü yuyularaq dağılmış qəbirlərdən müxtəlif qəbir avadanhqları, о cümlədən metal məmulatları tapıl-mışdır. Tədqiq olunan metal əşyalarm böyük bir qismini isə yerli sakinlər topla-yaraq institutumuzun əməkdaşlarına təhvil vermişlər.

In June-July 2024, within a month, archaeological excavations were carried out at the Late Bronze-Early Iron Age settlement of Tava Tepe in the Agstafa region within the framework of joint scientific cooperation between the Center for Archaeological Research in the Mediterranean and the Near East (CAMNES) located in Florence, Italy, and the University of Catania and the Institute of Archaeology, Ethnography and Anthropology of ANAS, in cooperation with European specialists. Based on the research of previous years and the structure uncovered during this year, we concluded that the monument was used as a place of worship in the Late Bronze Age. On the territory, a round structure was discovered, where ritual activities were performed, including a layer of ash in the very centre, up to 1 m thick, as well as household utensils with food remains, animal bones, household items, hearths, and pintaders …

For the communities of the southern Caucasus, …
For the communities of the southern Caucasus, the Kura River has been a fundamental resource for stimulating communication within this broad and geographically fragmented landscape, but also for supporting the economic subsistence of the people living here. In western Azerbaijan, this is clearly evident through the observation of the archaeological data available from the so-called Kura-Araxes period (c. 3600-2500 BCE) as well as for the Late Bronze/Iron Age periods (c. 1500-600 BCE). Accordingly, the Azerbaijan-Italian archaeological project in western Azerbaijan has focused its attention on analysing how the archaeological relics left behind by the communities inhabiting this region during the previously mentioned periods can be interpreted as part of a transforming socio-economical pattern within which the interaction between mobility and sedentarisation was more complex than previously conceived. In particular, the project aims are: to reconstruct the funerary landscape of the Kura-Araxes communities inhabiting the Uzun Rama plateau (in the Goranboy province) through a detailed investigation of the kurgans (ie, funerary mounds) of this specific period; to analyse a Late Bronze Age and Iron Age site, Tava Tepe (in the Aǧstafa district), that represents, for this specific period, a unique example of an unfortified settlement characterised by the presence of huts with clear evidence of specialised production activities (ie kilns and slags, mortars and grinding stones, areas for metal productions) that testifies to a high level of social complexity.
