CHANGES IN COULOMB STRESS DURING CASPIAN EARTHQUAKES IN 2023 WITH M= 5.6 Seismoprognosis Observations in the Territory of Azerbaijan /Cild: 25 /N: 1 Gurban Yetirmishli, SE Kazimova 0 2024 The article analyzes two significant Caspian earthquakes … The article analyzes two significant Caspian earthquakes that occurred on July 4, 2023 local time 00: 01 and December 7, 2023 local time 08: 15 with a local magnitude of M= 5.6. For this purpose, the source mechanisms of these earthquakes were constructed, and two stress state coefficients were analyzed-Lode-Nadai and Coulomb stress. In 2023, as in previous years, the Caspian Sea water area is characterized by high seismicity. The highest density of hypocenters was observed at a depth of 42-68 km. The magnitude of the displacements in the source shows that fault-slip type movements predominate here. A total of 19 earthquakes were plotted and analyzed in the Caspian Sea in 2023. These earthquakes were associated with the zone of influence of the Agrakhan-Krasnovodsk, Turkmenbashi, Sangachal-Ogurchi, Shakhov-Azizbekov, Siyazan and Garabogaz-Safidrud faults. Based on these mechanisms, the Lode-Nadai coefficient was constructed and it was established that the sources of Caspian earthquakes are located in the extension zone. The solution of the moment tensor showed that the movement at the source of the July 4 earthquake arose under tension conditions. Movement in the source along both planes is shear. The length of the outbreak was 6.1 km, width–4.53 km. The movement along the fault was 24 cm. In the source of the earthquake that occurred on December 7, 2023, according to the solution of the mechanism, movement in the source also occurred under tension conditions. The type of movement, along the first plane NP1 of a northwest strike and along the second plane NP2 of an east-southeast strike, is a strike … Daha çox

ISMAYILLI EARTHQUAKE WITH ML= 3.8 OF JANUARY 31, 2023 Seismoprognosis Observations in the Territory of Azerbaijan /Cild: 23 /N: 1 GJ Yetirmishli, SS Ismayilova, EM Bagyrov, AT Ismayilova 0 2023 The Shamakhi-Balakan geodynamic polygon, covering the areas … The Shamakhi-Balakan geodynamic polygon, covering the areas of the southern slope of the southeastern subsidence of the Greater Caucasus, is one of the most seismically active parts of the meganticlinorium, where strong seismic events occurred in the early and middle of the 20th century. The polygon covers several seismically active zones with regime forecasting observations: Shamakhi-Ismayilli, Oghuz-Gabala and Sheki-Zakatala zones (Yetirmishli et al., 2018, 2021). The seismic regime of each zone differs in its parameters and changes over time (Baghirov, Ismayilova, 2019). The stationary network of seismic stations in the Ismayilli-Shamakhi seismic zone has registered more than a thousand earthquakes of different energy classes. The ongoing seismic events convince of the importance of the problem of studying the seismicity of the Shamakhi-Ismayilli zone in order to identify the features of the manifestation of earthquakes and assess the degree of their potential seismic hazard, as well as the feasibility of conducting geophysical studies to predict the seismic process (Baghirov, Ismayilova, 2019). DETERMINATION OF THE DEPTHS OF THE ACTIVE BLOCKS ACCORDING TO THE DATA OF THE GPS STATIONS Seismoprognosis Observations in the Territory of Azerbaijan /Cild: 22 /N: 2 GJ Yetirmishli, IE Kazimov, AF Kazimova 0 2022 Based on the correlation of GPS data … Based on the correlation of GPS data and hypocenters of strong earthquakes, the boundaries were identified and the depths of occurrence of active tectonic blocks in the areas of the southeastern subsidence of the Greater Caucasus, the Kura depression and the Talysh zone of Azerbaijan were determined. It has been established that the velocity field of GPS observations on the territory of Azerbaijan clearly illustrates the predominance of the movement of the earth's crust in the N-NE direction relative to Eurasia. The most clearly manifested feature of the velocity field is a decrease in velocity at observation points located on the territory of the Greater Caucasus. GPS observation points located along the MCT show a decrease in speed in an easterly direction. N-NE movement of the earth's surface is interpreted as one of the reasons for the accumulation of stresses on this thrust. In addition, there is a tendency for horizontal movement within the Kura depression and the Lesser Caucasus, where the speed increases from west to east along the strike of the mountain range. In addition, the analysis of the azimuth angles showed an increase at the stations located on the Absheron Peninsula. Based on the correlation of GPS data and hypocenters of strong earthquakes, in the Guba-Gusar region in the direction NW-SE at a depth of 5 to 40 km, a block with velocities of 5.8 mm/g and a length of 55 km is distinguished. On the depth profile of Zakatala-Gobustan (NW-SE) in the southeast direction at an epicentral distance of 20 to 250 km, a gradual subsidence of the tectonic block is observed with velocities of 6.25 mm/g from a depth of 20 to 55 km. The continent‐continent collision zone between Arabia and Eurasia has been widely studied in this context, but several different viable geodynamic models exist to explain the uplift and deformation of the Anatolian Plateau and the Caucasus Mountains. We have imaged the uppermost mantle shear wave velocity structure of the East Anatolian‐Caucasus region using surface wave tomography to better understand the regional tectonic activity since the onset of the collision between the Arabian and Eurasian Plates. Furthermore, we used our tomographic models to better understand the processes, which are responsible for the formation of the 2 km high plateau and the widespread volcanism in eastern Turkey, as well … Daha çox

We merged and homogenized data from different earthquake catalogues, relocated ~1000 seismic events, created a database of 366 selected focal mechanism solutions, 239 of which are new, and performed a formal stress inversion. Preferential alignments of crustal earthquake foci indicate that most seismic areas are located along the southern margin of the belt and in the north-eastern sector. This is consistent with the presence of dominant active WNW-ESE faults, parallel to the mountain range. In the entire Greater Caucasus, a dominant NNE-SSW-oriented greatest principal stress (σ1) controls the over-all occurrence of earthquakes of minor and major magnitude. Deep earthquakes beneath the Northern Caucasus: evidence of active or recent subduction in western Asia Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America / Seismological Society of America /Cild: 102 /N: 2 səh: 862-866 G Yetirmishli, N Turkelli, R Gok, T Godoladze, RJ Mellors, J Jackson, S Myers, K Priestley 43 2012 An intermediate‐depth earthquake is confirmed at a … An intermediate‐depth earthquake is confirmed at a depth of 158±4  km under the northern foothills of the Greater Caucasus. Separate methods were used to confirm the depth: data from local and regional networks, teleseismic depth phases, and examination of waveforms. Additional examination of global catalogs suggests the presence of a (perhaps remnant) northeast‐dipping subduction zone under the Greater Caucasus. The most likely explanation appears to be subduction of oceanic crust with the interface at the northern edge of the Kura Basin. Events at depths of 30–50 km in the Kura Basin may be related to underthrusting by the South Caspian basin rather than subduction in the Greater Caucasus. Daha çox

The study area is the zone of under-thrusting (pseudosubduction) interaction between Southern and Northern Caucasus continental microplates, which caused the tectonic stratification of the Alpine formations into various allochthonous and parauthochthonous thrust slices of southern vergency between the Middle Bajocian and Quaternary periods. These slices are grouped into the nappe complexes that form the modern structure of the trough in the study area. The large linearly stretched tectonic units (megazones) correspond to the axis of the Alpine marginal sea basin, the consolidated crust of which is subjected to destruction and thinning. The trough’s Alpine cover was compressed in the underthrust zone and pushed southwards. As a result, an accretionary prism formed allochthonously overlapping the northern side of the Southern Caucasus microplate by the system of gently dipping overthrusts. During the continental stage of Alpine tectogenesis (starting from the end of Miocene), intensive lateral compression process was caused by intrusion of the frontal wedge of the Arabian indenter into the buffer structures of the southern frame of Eurasia. This is evidenced by the GPS monitoring data on modern geodynamic activity, which demonstrates the Southern Caucasus block’s intensive (up to 29 mm/year) intrusion in the northern rhumbs as compared to the relative stability of the Northern Caucasus microplate (0-6 mm/year). This, in turn, is a reflection of the ongoing pseudosubduction regime (continental subduction or S-subduction … Daha çox

The current building code of Georgia (2009) is not fully compatible with seismic hazard and design concepts of modern codes. The Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia is currently undertaking an update to the building code to align it with EuroCode. In conjunction with EuroCode, a National Annex specific to Georgia is needed, including seismic hazard values for the territory of Georgia. A comprehensive earthquake catalogue is fundamental to a robust PSHA in the region. The Caucasus has had an uneven seismic recording and reporting history both temporally and spatially. Therefore, there has been a strong regional effort to bring together data from all the countries in the Caucasus, to digitize and standardize paper-based data from the Soviet era, and to re-examine magnitude and location calculations. The earthquake catalogue resulting from this effort forms the basis for a reliable seismic hazard assessment. Recognizing these needs, the U.S. Department of Energy through Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) initiated a project in 2015 to engage and train local scientists in the Caucasus to install new equipment, to enhance the quality of seismic monitoring and reporting, and to improve and harmonize the regional earthquake catalogue. In 2016, the project scope was expanded to include the modernization of seismic hazard assessments. Maps of the earthquake epicenters are shown in this article and 5442 seismic shocks were recorded. The distribution of earthquakes by regions is related to their tectonic structure. Histograms of the number of earthquakes in the area and the distribution of released seismic energy for months, as well as years have been created. It was determined that seismic activity in the south-eastern slope of the Greater Caucasus-ZagatalaBalakan zone is A10 = 1.6-2.0, in Shamakhi-Ismayilli zone A10 = 1.6-2.0, in Talish A10 = 1.6-2.0, in the north of the Caspian Sea A10 = 0.6-1.0, in the center A10 = 0.9-1.6, and in the southern part the active areas are equal to A10 = 1.0-1.7. Compared to 2018, the number of earthquakes in 2019 increased, and the amount of released seismic energy has decreased. Thus, in 2018, the number of earthquakes in the territory of Azerbaijan was 4081, the amount of released seismic energy ∑E = 42.7 ∙ 1011C, the maximum magnitude ml = 5.5, the number of earthquakes in 2019 was 5442, the amount of released seismic energy ∑E = 31.9 ∙ 1011C, the highest magnitude ml = 5.2. Based on the data of the obtained earthquake source mechanisms, the scheme of compression and tension axes was constructed. As can be seen from the map, the compression axes in the Zakatala-Balakan zone are mainly directed in the direction of the NEW-SE, in the Shamakhi-Ismayilli, Middle and Lower Kura basins and in the Talish zone in the direction of the NE-SW. The Shamakhi-Ismailli seismogenic zone is known … Relevance. The Shamakhi-Ismailli seismogenic zone is known as the zone of the most powerful earthquakes in the Caucasus, which has been characterized by high seismic activity for centuries. Analysis of seismicity over the past 15 years has shown an increase in activity in this region. In October 2012, there was a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3. It is this earthquake that can be considered a trigger of activity in this region in subsequent years. In view of this, the task of studying seismicity, as well as the stress fields of the lithosphere of the region under study, seems to be especially urgent. The study of the seismicity of the Shamakhi-Ismailli zone provides additional information on the deep tectonic processes occurring in this region, which is important for seismic zoning. Aim. The article analyzes the seismic activity of the Shamakhi-Ismailli region, which began with an earthquake on February 5 at 19 h 19 min, with ml= 4.4, which occurred 11 minutes before the main shock with an intensity of 6 points, which occurred on February 5, 2019 at 19 h 31 m. It has been established that along the Lesser Caucasus, in the Kura basin, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the border regions of Iran, there is a compression zone oriented to the NE. The maximum value of the strain rate throughout the territory of Azerbaijan fluctuates within 13.7 mm/year; the average value for all stations is 7.9 mm/year. Analysis of the velocity field also showed low velocit y values in the Greater Caucasus (4-6 mm/year). In addition, a correlation analysis of the value of velocities with the seismic activity of the region was carried out. It is concluded that there is a certain relationship between the change in the values of the velocities of horizont a l movements and the distribution of strong earthquakes in the field of the rate of deformation of the earth's crust. Besides the well-known Gutenberg–Richter b value and the coefficients of variation, two quantities, derived by the recent method of horizontal visibility graph are analysed, namely the mean connectivity degree, which depicts an innovative way to link seismic events, and the Kullback–Leibler divergence (KLD) that informs about the irreversibility of the seismic process. Our findings indicate the emergence of pre- and co-seismic patterns in the time variation of all the analysed parameters in relationship with the strongest events of the Azerbaijan seismic catalog. In particular, the typical increase–decrease behavior has been found in b before the occurrence of large shocks. Similarly, the coefficients of variation signals are statistically significant high value in the … Daha çox

There are more than 80 oil and gas fields here. For this purpose, this article presents the geological structure of the South Caspian Depression, as well as the Apsheron-Pribalkhansk zone. Conducted analysis of oil and gas reserves and modern seismicity of the Caspian Sea. Increase in recoverable oil reserves, stabilization of mining at this stage—the task number is one for the oil field. It has been established that in recent years the level of seismic activity in certain areas of the Caspian Sea has risen, and the amount of seismic energy released in the Central Caspian Sea has increased by several dozen times. Distribution of density of epicenters in the whole alpine part of the region carries a weakly expressed wave character, which is represented by an alternation of differentiated zones of elevated and lowered concentration of epicenters. Zones have a predominantly north-western, submeridional and subshirot space. To determine the regularity of the distribution of hypocenter centers in the region, a diagram of the dependence of the number of earthquakes on the depths was built. In the waters of the Caspian Sea, 90% of the hypocenters are located at a depth of more than 35 km. Together with them meet and close surface earthquakes. It was assumed that the change in the flow of oil in many seabed areas of the northern part of the Absheron-Balkhan storage system is associated with strong (m l> 3.0) earthquakes of characteristic type. Here we present the results of the first paleoseismic study of the Kura fold-thrust belt in Azerbaijan. A single paleoseismic trench was excavated across a 2-m-high fault scarp near Agsu revealing evidence of two recent surface rupturing earthquakes. Radiocarbon dating of the faulted sediments places limits of earthquake timing of AD 1713-1895 and AD 1872-2003 for the two events. Allowing for uncertainties in radiocarbon dating, the two events likely correspond to historical destructive M~7 earthquakes near Shamakhi, Azerbaijan in AD 1668 and 1902. Holocene shortening and dip-slip rates for the Kura fold-thrust belt are 8 and 8.5 mm/yr, respectively, based on the depositional age of an abandoned uplifted strath terrace in a water gap to the west of Agsu. These rates should be treated as maxima, as they are ~100% of the previously determined structurally and geodetically measured shortening across the belt, and were measured from only one of two primary structures in this part of the belt. The lack of reported historical ruptures from the past 8 centuries to the west of Agsu, in contrast with the numerous recorded destructive earthquakes of the Shamakhi region, suggests that the central and western parts of the Kura fold-thrust belt produce less frequent, but more destructive earthquakes, and may have accumulated sufficient strain to produce a M>8 earthquake. A NEW APPROACH TO DETERMINE THE IMPACT OF GEODYNAMIC STRESS ON OIL PRODUCTION IN THE SOUTH CASPIAN BASIN book GJ Yetirmishli, AV Samedzade 1 2025 The scientific justification of the geodynamic impact … The scientific justification of the geodynamic impact of small and strong earthquakes that occurred in Azerbaijan between 2003 and 2024 on the structural layers within the South Caspian Basin (exemplified by the Bulla-Deniz oil and gas field) has been provided. Based on the epicentral distance distribution of the earthquakes, earthquakes with a magnitude of M≥ 3, that occurred in this structure between 2018 and 2024, were selected. The effect of these earthquakes on the field and the changes in production were analyzed comparatively. In this analysis, only the epicentral distance of the earthquakes was considered, and the potential geodynamic effect of the earthquakes on the field was studied using a different methodological approach. The effect radius corresponding to the earthquake energy distribution and the accumulation time of the potential elastic strain energy were calculated. Based on these calculations, earthquakes that could potentially impact the field were selected, and a table was constructed showing the changes in energy accumulation period and impact distance. Thus, using a new methodological approach, the impact of earthquakes with a magnitude of M≥ 3 that occurred in Azerbaijan between 2003 and 2024 in the Bulla-Deniz field was determined. In this context, an analysis was conducted to identify the parameters of earthquakes that could cause anomalous variations in the field, taking into account the impact distances of the earthquakes. In the study area, the geodynamic impact and the energy store period of the earthquakes were considered in evaluating their effect on oil production in exploitation wells. Daha çox

Earthquakes were accompanied by large-scale destruction, deformation of the earth's surface and were felt in 10 provinces of the country, and on the territory of Israel, Iraq, Lebanon, Georgia, Armenia. The reasons for the large-scale destruction of buildings are considered to be precisely the underestimation of the level of risks for this area, as well as the lack of regular inspections of the safety of buildings by local authorities. In addition, the area where the disaster occurred is located in the junction zone of three tectonic plates: African, Arabian and Anatolian, and is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. The focal mechanism of a strong earthquake (M=7.8) was built and analyzed. In this work, we used the waveform inversion algorithm developed by prof. John Nabelek from Oregon University. It was found that the focal mechanism of the main shock is a left-lateral strike-slip, consistent with the East Anatolian Fault. Daha çox

SEISMOLOGICAL-GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH CONDUCTED IN DASHKESAN SKARNIRON ORE GROUP BED AND ASSESSMENT OF THE RISK OF LANDSLIDE THAT MAY OCCUR IN THE AREA Seismoprognosis Observations in the Territory of Azerbaijan / Science Publishing House of ANAS /Cild: 24 /N: 2 səh: 3-14 Gurban Yetırmıshlı, Elchin Bagirov, Etibar Garavaliyev, Rauf Muradov, Nadirshah Khanbabayev 0 2023 1. In the article, it is noted … 1. In the article, it is noted that the value of the average transverse wave speed parameter varies between 400-515 m/s in the seismic profiles developed in the waste and landslide areas of Dashkasan skarn-iron ore group beds up to a depth of 30 m. In the left wing of the resulting landslide, a geological disturbance was determined in the direction of the fault-falling layer. A layer with a low transverse wave speed (350- 441 m/s) is observed in the landslide area in seismic profiles No. 4 and 5 at a depth of 30-44, 30-47 m, respectively. This layer is assumed to be a clay layer. Inside the clay layer, a lens with a value of transverse wave speed varying between 263-351 m/s is observed. It is assumed that this lens has a layer of watery clay and the sliding plane corresponds to this layer. 2. In the direction of Mollahasanli village, a layer with low transverse wave speed (305-425 m/s) is observed at a depth of 30-45 m, and a lens with low wave speed is not observed inside this layer. From this point of view, the current condition of the retaining dam is considered stable compared to the landslide area. 3. In the waste and landslide area of Dashkasan skarn - iron ore group beds, the geodynamic regime was evaluated, the tension dynamics of the gravity and geomagnetic field were studied, and tectonic fault zones were found. These areas are assumed to be prone to landslides. 4. In the area of the new landfill, the observed gravity and geomagnetic stress are at background levels. Using a geodynamic model of a pair of right-lateral strike-slip faults, an interpretation of the focal mechanisms of the Zagatala, Balakan, Oghuz, Gabala and Sheki earthquakes was given, and a mechanism of the Caucasian fault with a left-sided strike-slip component was established. A connection between the observed seismicity and the tectonic structure of the region was revealed. The nature of movements in the active parts of deep faults has been revealed. An analysis of the orientation of the main stress axes of earthquake focal mechanisms was carried out. Depth profiles of displacements in the sources of strong earthquakes were constructed. Based on the orientation data of the compression and tension axes, a map of the distribution of the Lode-Nadai coefficient was constructed. As can be seen on the maps, the Zagatala, Balakan and Gabala regions are mainly characterized by tensile stresses. Compressive stresses are observed in the Sheki and Oghuz regions. Thus, in 2003-2023, the displacement values were determined in the foci of earthquakes with magnitude ml≥4 in the Balaken, Zagatala, Sheki, Oguz and Gabala regions. In the Sheki, Oguz, Gabala regions at a depth of 12-19 km, the displacement is 0.26-0.35 m, and in the Zagatala and Balakan regions 0.15-0.27 m at a depth of 3-15 km. The smallest displacement of 0.1 0.12 m was recorded in the Sheki region. Daha çox

The Filizchay deposit, considered one of the largest deposits in Europe in terms of ore reserves and is very rich in base metal reserves throughout the world, is one of the largest projects that the AzerGold organization preparing for operation. The Filizchay deposit is located in the Zagatala-Balakan seismogenic zone. The article analyzes the seismicity of this zone and considers the assessment of seismic hazard around the field. As the analysis showed, the Filizchay pyrite-polymetallic deposit is located in one of the most seismically active regions of Azerbaijan. Such strong earthquakes as the Zagatala earthquake on May 7, 2012, the Balaken earthquake on October 14, 2012, and the Zagatala earthquake on June 5, 2018 have repeatedly occurred here. In addition, it should be noted that this field is affected not only by local earthquakes, but also by strong earthquakes located in neighboring regions. Such as the Oguz earthquake of 2015 and the Gabala earthquakes of 2014. All of the above earthquakes were characterized by an intensity of 7 points at the source and 5-6 points in the territory of the Filizchay field. As can be seen from the seismic activity maps, the Zagatala-Balakan zone is characterized by activity values of 1.6-2.0. Analysis of the depth distribution of hypocenters within the study region showed that the bulk of earthquakes are concentrated at a depth of 2-25 km. Daha çox

The purpose of the research was to reveal how complex geodynamic processes are reflected in the spatial and temporal distribution of strong earthquakes in the territory of the Azerbaijan part of the Greater Caucasus. For this purpose, GPS and seismological data for the period 2012-2022 were considered. The main tasks were to analyze the strong earthquakes that occurred in the territory under consideration, analyze the data on the velocities of horizontal movements obtained from the data of the GPS network of RSSC stations, and also make a correlation between these data. The velocity field clearly illustrates the movement of the earth's surface in a north-northeast direction. This phenomenon reflects the process of successive accumulation of elastic deformations in the zone of subduction interaction of the structures of the northern side of the South Caucasian microplate (Vandam-Gobustan megazone) with the accretionary prism of the Greater Caucasus. Comparing the seismic data with the data of GPS stations, it can be seen that with the gradual immersion of the seismogenic layer, the velocities increase. At SATG and ALIG stations, the data increase to 10-11 mm/g. It can be noted that the change in the values of horizontal movements on the territory of the Zakatalo-Balakan, Oguz-Gabala seismogenic zones is associated with the movement of layers (blocks) of the earth's crust at a depth of 5-20-40 km. In the Sheki seismogenic zone 2-30 km, in the Shamakhi-Ismayilli zone 5-45 km, and in the Hajigabul seismogenic zone 5-55 km. Daha çox

Based on the correlation of GPS data and hypocenters of strong earthquakes, in the GubaGusar region in the direction NW-SE at a depth of 5 to 40 km, a block with velocities of 5.8 mm/g and a length of 55 km is distinguished. Maps of epicenters, seismic profiles, mechanisms of earthquake sources, a map of the orientations of the compression and tension axes, as well as maps of the spatial distribution of the stress state coefficient were constructed and analyzed. Thus, the distribution of earthquake epicenters by area occurred within the study region for the period 2003-2022 showed uneven distribution of earthquake sources. The accumulation of earthquakes is highlighted in the zone of Saatly-Imishli and Gobustan-Shirvan regions. This accumulation indicates the presence of seismogenic zones in this region. The change in the magnitudes of earthquakes over time showed a periodicity in the release of energy: after a burst of energy, its decline is observed. Analysis of seismic profiles in the NW-SE direction made it possible to identify two zones of distribution of hypocenters 0-10 km and 10-25 km with a slight tendency to subside. On the seismic profile in the SW-NE direction, at a depth of 35-60 km, the Saatly-Imishli seismogenic zone is distinguished, at the epicentral distance of 60-85 km, the Hadjigabul, at the epicentral distance of 85-110 km, the Shamakhi seismogenic zone. The data were recorded by RCSS-ANAS seismic network and include 498 events with local magnitude between 0.5 and 4.7. Fig. 2 shows the epicentral distribution of the analysed seismic dataset. The estimation of b-value was performed by means of maximum likelihood method (Aki, 1965). Since the b-value estimate depends on M, it is firstly required that the c completeness of the seismic catalogue is evaluated. Fig. 3 (left) shows the cumulative (CFMD) and non-cumulative frequency-magnitude distribution (NCFMD) of the Minghechevir seismicity, used to calculate M. By using the c maximum curvature method (MAXC)(Wiemer and Wyss, 2000) M is estimated as the magnitude that corresponds to c the highest frequency of events in the NCFMD. In our case, the value of M is 1.6, from which the b is 0.900. 05. Therefore, c we analysed the seismic dataset of events with magnitude 1.6; this dataset contains 269 events (Fig. 3 (right)).1972; Reilinger et al.; Kadirov et al.; Kadirov et al. 2006 2012 2015). Geodynamic regime of seismogenic regions of Azerbaijan by seismological data EGU General Assembly Conference Abstracts səh: 1180 Gurban Yetirmishli, Sabina Kazimova 0 2017 Based on the analysis of earthquake focal … Based on the analysis of earthquake focal mechanisms composed a model of the geodynamic regime of seismogenic regions of Azerbaijan. These methods of stress inverse problem make it possible to calculate four out six components of tectonic stress tensor based on data on discontinuous dislocation: orientation of three principal stress axis (σk, k= 1, 2, 3), determined by three Euler's angles and Lode-Nadai or ratio coefficient characterizing shape of stress tensor. Thus, on the basis of the mentioned above were developed and analyzed the mechanisms of strong earthquakes foci occurred in the years 2003-2016 with a M≥ 3.0 and were installed characteristic features of seismotectonic deformation in the individual seismogenic zones of the Republic, as well as in the Caspian Sea region. Analysis of compressed axis orientation showed NW-SE orientation in Zagatala region, NS in Sheki and then gradually changing in a clockwise direction to the NE-SW direction in the Caspian Sea. Stretching axis is mainly oriented NE-SW and NS directions, due to the area of immersion of Kura depression under the Greater Caucasus zone. On the basis of the averaged data for each station was organized spatial amplification factor distribution map for the territory of Azerbaijan. The total value of the factor varies within the range of 1, 5-4, 6. The active tectonics causes a large number of earthquakes, which is likely to result in high vulnerability in the country. We are investigating the effect of large earthquakes on seismic hazard using ground motion simulation techniques. We start with using existing 2.5-D lithospheric model developed by Gok et al.,(2011). The model was obtained using data from national networks in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. The Republican Seismic Survey Center of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences recently deployed an additional 32 broad-band high-quality seismic stations in the country. Here we examine possible geodetic signals and seismological signals produced by an eruption. First, we use satellite (ALOS L-band) interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) to map the deformation associated with four known eruptions. These eruptions, which were also observed independently in the field, produced measurable InSAR signals of up to 10 cm equivalent vertical motion. Second, we model possible seismic signals produced by an eruption and related processes and examine how seismic data could distinguish between possible models, including using advanced methods of seismic signal detection. The EMME project covers Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Both EMME and SHARE projects overlap and Turkey becomes a bridge connecting the two projects. The Middle East region is tectonically and seismically very active part of the Alpine-Himalayan orogenic belt. The active tectonics of the EMME Project region has been shaped by the northward motion of the African, Arabian, and the Indian plates with respect to the Eurasian plate. After the elimination of the Neo-Tethys Ocean that had existed in the intervening areas between these plates, continental collision of the Arabian and Indian plates with the Eurasian plate created the Bitlis-Zagros and the Himalayan Fold and Thrust Belts, respectively. Even today the continental convergence and active crustal shortening is still going on between these plates as evidenced by GPS measurements and high seismic activity observed in the EMME Project region. Many major earthquakes have occurred in this region over the years causing casualties in the millions. The intense tectonic deformations along the Caucasus region are also the result of the continental collision and the continuing continental convergence. The northward subduction process is active along the Hellenic Trench, Cyprian Trench, Central Caspian, Makran and the Hindu-Kush (Figure 1). The study employs modern methods including satellite imagery, GNSS data, drone-based modeling, and paleoseismic trenching. In April–May 2022, a team of scientists from the University of Oxford, in collaboration with early-career researchers from the RSSС, carried out the first geological fieldwork in Azerbaijan focused on paleoseismology and active tectonic processes. Two trenches were analyzed. One of the key findings was the identification of active faults, such as the Aghsu fault, and evidence of surface ruptures associated with historical earthquakes. Two surface rupture events (1713–1895 and 1872–2003) were identified likely linked to the surface displacements caused by the 1668 and 1902 earthquakes, which inflicted significant damage on the city of Shamakhi. Our reassessment of the 1902 earthquake suggests its magnitude may have reached Mw 7.4, whereas earlier estimates placed it at M 6.9. Additionally, evidence of a surfacerupturing earthquake dated between 334 and 118 BCE was found in a second trench located 60 km west of Aghsu near Goychay along with signs of another possible event within the past 2000 years. This work highlights the importance of continued field investigations to better constrain fault lengths, assess historical earthquake magnitudes, and improve regional seismic hazard … Daha çox

Fault creep in the fluid-rich Kura Basin, Azerbaijan, imaged with InSAR Geophysical Journal International / Oxford University Press /Cild: 243 /N: 2 səh: ggaf320 Gurban Yetirmishli, Sabina Kazimova, Ilyas Kazimov, Rashid Javanshir, Neill Marshall, Richard Walker, Benedict Johnson, John Ross Elliott, Jessica Payne 0 2025 Current geodetic velocities show that over half … Current geodetic velocities show that over half (up to 10 mm yr−1) of Arabia-Eurasia shortening in the west is accommodated within a relatively narrow zone across the Kura basin of Azerbaijan, in which the most prominent active structure is the Kura fold-and-thrust belt, bordering the southern margin of the Greater Caucasus. The GNSS velocities furthermore suggest equivalent amounts of north–south right-lateral shear across the eastern Kura basin along the West Caspian fault zone that is accommodating relative motion between the Kura basin and the South Caspian basin. Although destructive historical earthquakes are known to have occurred, their spread is restricted geographically and their moment release accounts for only half of the accumulated deformation. These observations can be explained by incompleteness of the historical record, that the faults fail in rare larger earthquakes, or that they slip … Daha çox

STRUCTURAL COMPLEXES OF THE EARTH'S CRUST IN THE TERRITORY OF AZERBAIJAN USING SEISMIC TOMOGRAPHY METHOD book / Владикавказский научный центр РАН, Владикавказ səh: 50-59 GJ YETIRMISHLI, SE KAZIMOVA 0 0 Refinements of the positions of seismic events … Refinements of the positions of seismic events were carried out using the double-difference method. The principle of DD tomography is based on comparing the time differences of wave arrivals from various seismic events, which enables improved localization of hypocenters. As a result, the mutual positions of 4,813 events that occurred between 2015 and 2024 with a magnitude of ml> 3.0 were redefined. The epicenters calculated using the double-difference method are arranged in linear or point forms, which correlate well with the relief features and geological structure. Subsequently, spatial velocity models were computed using the TomoDD program algorithms. A seven-layer model of changes in P-wave velocities was constructed. Based on seismic tomography data, a structural 3D model of the Earth's crust of the Republic was developed. The figure shows the thickness of the sedimentary cover, granitic, and … Daha çox

Crustal deformation of the Azerbaijan territory: results from 25 years (1998-2022) of monitoring using GPS EGU General Assembly Conference Abstracts səh: EGU25-1950 Gurban Yetirmishli, Michael Floyd, Robert Reilinger, Samir Mammadov, Rafig Safarov, Ilyas Kazimov, Robert King 0 2025 We present GPS observations of crustal deformation … We present GPS observations of crustal deformation monitoring in Azerbaijan and adjacent territory which carried out since 1998. Unlike our previous studies there are more permanent GPS station and survey mode data aggregated, which accordingly allowed us more accurately determine the dynamics of the main tectonic structures. Eight permanent stations were established by the Institute of Geology and Geophysics since 2006. In 2012, Republican Seismological Survey Center of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences started to construct permanent GPS stations, where totally 24 stations were established. Over 35 survey mode sites were measured repeatedly starting from 1998 to 2022. On a broad scale, the GPS velocity field clearly illustrates the NNE motion of Caucasus and adjacent regions with respect to Eurasia south of the Main Caucasus Thrust Fault (MCT). An important note here is the sharp … Daha çox

INVESTIGATION OF THE DEEP STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH'S CRUST OF AZERBAIJAN AND THE CASPIAN REGION USING THE METHOD OF SEISMIC TOMOGRAPHY book SE Kazimova, GJ Yetirmishli, ZS Gadirov 0 2025 This study focuses on a comprehensive investigation … This study focuses on a comprehensive investigation of the deep structure of the Earth's crust and upper mantle in Azerbaijan and the adjacent Caspian Sea region, within the tectonic framework of the Caucasus orogen. The main objective is to reconstruct the layered-block structure of the crust, refine the spatial distribution of earthquake hypocenters, and identify key tectonic features, including subduction zones and active faults. To achieve these goals, seismic tomography was applied using an improved double-difference method (TomoDD-SE), which enables simultaneous determination of P-and S-wave velocity structures and precise localization of earthquake hypocenters. The dataset comprises the seismic catalog of the Republican Seismological Service Center of Azerbaijan for the period 2011–2023, which includes approximately 7500 local earthquakes (magnitude≥ 2.0) recorded by 47 broadband stations, as well as additional stations in Georgia and Turkey. The data were processed using a three-dimensional velocity grid developed with the VELEST program and validated through checkerboard resolution tests. The results confirm a layered-block structure of the crust with sharp velocity boundaries and a thick sedimentary cover (up to 25 km) in the South Caspian Basin. The TomoDD method supports the oceanic origin of the crystalline basement beneath the Kura–Araz Basin and reveals ongoing subduction beneath the eastern Greater Caucasus. Refined hypocenter locations show alignment with active tectonic structures, such as the Main Caucasus Thrust, the Kura Fold Zone, and the Western Caspian Fault. Low-velocity zones … Daha çox
