Onun elmi fəaliyyəti sistemli şəkildə Azərbaycan və qonşu regionların seysmologiyası və geodinamikasına yönəlmişdir. Əsas tədqiqat istiqamətlərinə seysmik fəallığın təhlili, zəlzələ mənbə mexanizmləri, seysmik risk qiymətləndirməsi və müasir monitorinq texnologiyalarının tətbiqi daxildir. O, indeksli jurnallarda və konfrans materiallarında əhəmiyyətli nəşrlərlə geniş tədqiqat profili formalaşdırmışdır. Ən diqqətəlayiq əsərlər arasında '2012-2014-cü illər ərzində Azərbaycan ərazisində baş verən güclü zəlzələlər' (2015) – regionun seysmik təhlükəsizliyi üçün praktiki əhəmiyyət daşıyan seysmiklik və tektonik quruluş arasındakı əlaqələri araşdıran; '2019-cu il Azərbaycan ərazisinin seysmikliyi' (2021) – illik seysmik təhlil və enerji paylanması modellərini təqdim edən; və 'Şərqi Qafqazda torpaq hərəkətinin modelləşdirilməsi' (2016) – qabaqcıl simulyasiya üsulları vasitəsilə seysmik risk qiymətləndirməsinə töhfə verən əsərlər yer alır. Nəşr spektri beynəlxalq platformalara qədər uzanır, tədqiqatlar Xəzər dənizinin seysmogeodinamikası, konkret zəlzələlərin fokal parametrləri və ətraf mühitin sağlamlığı ilə bağlı tədqiqatları əhatə edir. The landslide incident was recorded around the Mingachevir water basin on August 27, 2014. The landslide process occurred in the Boz mountain range mainly on its north-east slopes. The boundary of the slip plane and the active area directed South West-North East of Boz mountain slopes exposed to landslide were determined in this zone. Studies have shown that the depth of the slip plane is different in the separate fields of this area and it changes between 6 to 88 meters.

The Shamakhi-Balakan geodynamic polygon, covering the areas of the southern slope of the southeastern subsidence of the Greater Caucasus, is one of the most seismically active parts of the meganticlinorium, where strong seismic events occurred in the early and middle of the 20th century. The polygon covers several seismically active zones with regime forecasting observations: Shamakhi-Ismayilli, Oghuz-Gabala and Sheki-Zakatala zones (Yetirmishli et al., 2018, 2021). The seismic regime of each zone differs in its parameters and changes over time (Baghirov, Ismayilova, 2019). The stationary network of seismic stations in the Ismayilli-Shamakhi seismic zone has registered more than a thousand earthquakes of different energy classes. The ongoing seismic events convince of the importance of the problem of studying the seismicity of the Shamakhi-Ismayilli zone in order to identify the features of the manifestation of earthquakes and assess the degree of their potential seismic hazard, as well as the feasibility of conducting geophysical studies to predict the seismic process (Baghirov, Ismayilova, 2019).

In this study, we analyzed the performance of a preliminary three-dimensional (3D) velocity model of the Eastern Caucasus covering most of the Azerbaijan. The model was developed in support to long-period ground motion simulations and seismic hazard assessment from regional earthquakes in Azerbaijan. The model’s performance was investigated by simulating ground motion from the damaging Mw 5.9, 2012 Zaqatala earthquake, which was well recorded throughout the region by broadband seismic instruments. In our simulations, we use a parallelized finite-difference method of fourth-order accuracy. The comparison between the simulated and recorded ground motion velocity in the modeled period range of 3–20 s shows that in general, the 3D velocity model performs well. The article provides an analysis of the seismicity of Azerbaijan territory for 2019 year. Maps of the earthquake epicenters are shown in this article and 5442 seismic shocks were recorded. The distribution of earthquakes by regions is related to their tectonic structure. Histograms of the number of earthquakes in the area and the distribution of released seismic energy for months, as well as years have been created. It was determined that seismic activity in the south-eastern slope of the Greater Caucasus-ZagatalaBalakan zone is A10 = 1.6-2.0, in Shamakhi-Ismayilli zone A10 = 1.6-2.0, in Talish A10 = 1.6-2.0, in the north of the Caspian Sea A10 = 0.6-1.0, in the center A10 = 0.9-1.6, and in the southern part the active areas are equal to A10 = 1.0-1.7. Compared to 2018, the number of earthquakes in 2019 increased, and the amount of released seismic energy has decreased. Thus, in 2018, the number of earthquakes in the territory of Azerbaijan was 4081, the amount of released seismic energy ∑E = 42.7 ∙ 1011C, the maximum magnitude ml = 5.5, the number of earthquakes in 2019 was 5442, the amount of released seismic energy ∑E = 31.9 ∙ 1011C, the highest magnitude ml = 5.2. Based on the data of the obtained earthquake source mechanisms, the scheme of compression and tension axes was constructed. As can be seen from the map, the compression axes in the Zakatala-Balakan zone are mainly directed in the direction of the NEW-SE, in the Shamakhi-Ismayilli, Middle and Lower Kura basins and in the Talish zone in the direction of the NE-SW.

The article deals with the seismic activity of the Azerbaijan part of the Caspian Sea on the basis of current data on seismicity and geostructure of studied region.The analysis of its seismic activity and the results of the determination of mechanisms of earthquake sources are given. It was found that most of the earthquakes are concentrated in Absheron-Cheleken threshold zone. Depth of sources largely varies within 25-35 and 40-60 km. Most of the earthquakes are below the Moho boundary, which indicates the deep roots of Absheron-Balkhan mobile system. The results of determination of mechanisms of the earthquake sources have shown that for the territory of Central Caspian depression troughs for small values of angles of the axes elongation are typical large-angle compression axis that indicates the predominance of strike-shift movements.

The article analyzes the connection between strong and catastrophic earthquakes (M 5.5) with an activity of Alpine-Himalayan belt on the territory of Azerbaijan. According to the data from 35 digital seismic stations were studied seismic regime, earthquake focal mechanisms, and the spatial and temporal distribution of earthquake sources. The sequence of seismic processes indicated a definite connection. Analysis of all earthquakes showed that nearly 80% of the extension axes shocks and 40% compression axes shocks deflection in PL do not exceed 20. Orientation of extension axes generally dominates in the SW-NW direction, but the orientation of compression axes is detected in the NE-SW direction (67%) and in the NW-SE direction (33%).

The article describes the seismic monitoring system in Azerbaijan and surrounding regions, using BRTT Antelope software. In the period from 2003 to 2023, the main attention of the Republican Seismic Survey Center (RSSC), along with monitoring geodynamic processes on the territory of the republic and adjacent regions, was aimed at expanding the network, as well as developing and modernizing methods and means for organizing observations, collecting, data processing and analysis. As a result, a wide network of telemetry stations was created, equipped with the most modern instruments for recording earth vibrations in real time. A storage system for seismological and geodetic (GPS) data was organized, high-speed access to the data archive was provided, high-performance computing clusters were deployed, and all seismic stations were connected into a single network. Work is being carried out and continues to introduce innovative technologies and master world experience in monitoring the parameters of the seismic regime on the territory of the republic. In 2003–2023 the seismic monitoring system in Azerbaijan allowed to process and analyze all recorded local, regional, remote tectonic earthquakes, industrial explosions, volcanic eruptions, as well as conduct comprehensive studies for seismic records.

In 2022, seismicity analysis was conducted based on 62 digital seismic stations. Throughout the year, 12,284 earthquakes were recorded. Of these, 3,383 were local earthquakes (occurring inthe territory of Azerbaijan), 3,314 were regional, and 4,011 were distant earthquakes. Additionally, 1,463 weak tremors (registered by a single station) and 1,575 industrial explosions were recorded. Compared to 2021, the number of earthquakes in 2022 andthe amount of released seismic energy decreased. In 2021, there were 6,071 earthquakes: the amount of seismic energy released was ∑E = 6.02×10¹² J, with a maximum magnitude of ml = 5.1. In 2022, the amount of released seismic energy was ∑E = 8.55×10¹¹ J, with a maximum magnitude of ml = 4.9. Throughout 2022, seismicity was observed in the Greater Caucasus, the Middle Kura Basin, and the Caspian Sea. Seismic activation was noted in the West Caspian, Palmira-Absheron, Aji-Chay-Alat, Ganja-Chay-Alazan, Gazakh-Signakh, Talysh, Akhvai, Sangachal-Ogurjuq, Garabogaz-Safidrud, and Agrahan-Kasnawod regions. Another mud volcano eruptionoccurred in Lokbatan, and based on the arrival time of waves from the stations, the period of mud volcano eruption activation, the depth of the focus, the duration of the eruption, and the energy released during the eruption were determined. On the basis of the analysis of new gravimetric data at the stage of preparation for the Ismayilli earthquake of 31.01.2023, ml=3.8 an assessment of the stress-strain state of the Shamakhi-Ismayilli seismogenic zone is given. For this, a fairly extensive study of information about the current state of seismicity in a certain region is required. The analysis of seismicity based on digital data of 2021 is reflected in the article. Along with earthquakes, explosions were also analyzed. From these studies, it is known that an increase in the number of earthquakes and the released seismic energy is observed in 2021. Seismic activation is mainly observed along the Western Caspian, Ajichay-Alat, Ganjachay-Alazan, Gazakh-Sygnakh, Front Talish, Talish, Sharur-Ordubad, Sangachal-Ogurchu, Garabogaz-Safidrud, Agrakhan-Krasnovodsk deep faults.

The Shamakhi-Balakan geodynamic polygon, covering the areas of the southern slope of the southeastern subsidence of the Greater Caucasus, is one of the most seismically active parts of the meganticlinorium, where strong seismic events occurred in the early and middle of the 20th century. The polygon covers several seismically active zones with regime forecasting observations: Shamakhi-Ismayilli, Oghuz-Gabala and Sheki-Zakatala zones (Yetirmishli et al., 2018, 2021). The seismic regime of each zone differs in its parameters and changes over time (Baghirov, Ismayilova, 2019). The stationary network of seismic stations in the Ismayilli-Shamakhi seismic zone has registered more than a thousand earthquakes of different energy classes. The ongoing seismic events convince of the importance of the problem of studying the seismicity of the Shamakhi-Ismayilli zone in order to identify the features of the manifestation of earthquakes and assess the degree of their potential seismic hazard, as well as the feasibility of conducting geophysical studies to predict the seismic process (Baghirov, Ismayilova, 2019).

In 2020, seismic analysis was conducted on the basis of 40 digital data. During the year, 13,295 earthquakes were recorded. Of them, 4030 are local (Azerbaijani territory), 3347 regional and 3123 remote earthquakes. At the same time, 1463 weak tremors (recorded by a single station), 1332 explosions were recorded. Compared to 2019, the number of earthquakes and the amount of seismic energy released in 2020 decreased. Thus, the number of earthquakes in 2020 was 4030, the amount of seismic energy released was ∑E=13.1•1011 J, the maximum magnitude was ml=4.9. During 2020, seismicity was observed in the Greater Caucasus, the Middle Kura Basin and the Caspian Sea. Seismic activation is observed along the West- Caspian, Palmir-Absheron, Ajichay-Alat, Ganjachay-Alazan, Gazakh-Signakh, Talish, Akhvay, Sangachal Ogurchu, Garabogaz-Safidrud, Agrakhan-Kasnavodsk, Khachincha y faults. The area of tension in the territory of Azerbaijan is divided into two areas along the Geokchay fault and the Imishli-Geokchay flexure: the north-eastern part of the republic is characterized by tension, and the southwestern part by compression. Tension is observed in the Absheron region and the Caspian Sea.

The seismogeodynamics analysis of the aquatorium of Caspian Sea in the Azerbaijani sector was conducted in 2018-2020 years.The first information about the earthquake in the Caspian Sea aquatorium dates back to 957 year and the last strong earthquake (M = 6.2) occurred on November 25, 2000, 50-60 km south of Absheron region.Analysis of the number of earthquakes and seismic energy shows that while the stability of seismic energy from 2016 to 2018 years was stable, in 2019 the seismic energy was twice as high.In 2020, an increase in the number of earthquakes and seismic energy compared to 2019 was observed. Seismic analysis showed that the earthquakes in the North Caspian Sea (with magnitude of ≥1.0) are associated with the activation of the Makhachkala-Krasnovodsk and Absheron-Near Balkhan faults.Earthquakes with a magnitude of ≥2.0, mainly with a magnitude of ≥3.0 occurred in the center of the Caspian Sea.The concentration of earthquakes was observed at the intersection of Agrakhan-Krasnovodsk, Makhachkala Krasnovodsk, Sangachal-Ogurchu and transverse GarabogazSafidrud faults. The seismicity of the Zagatala seismogenic zone has been analyzed on the basis of digital data for 2019. One of the most important events of the year was an earthquake in the Zagatala zone with a magnitude of 4.9. The Zagatala-Balakan zone is one of the main seismic active zones in Azerbaijan. High seismic activity is observed in the research area in 2019. The article extensively analyzes the history of the area and especially the digital data for 2019. The depth distribution of earthquake epicenters and sources have been studied, the seismic energy allocated by months have been calculated, intensity of the earthquake of magnitude 4.9, that occurred in this area on August 10, 2019, and geometric dimension of the Pleistocene area have been determined on the basis of macroseismic studies.

In the article the strong 7-point earthquake, occurred on September 4, 2015, at 4 h. 49 m. in the border of Sheki-Oghuz regions is analyzed. The historical earthquakes of the studied area, tectonic structure, peculiarities of epicentral field, focus distribution in depth were studied, the macroseismic investigations were held. The most earthquakes intensity was observed in the territories of Gozlubulag, Yagublu, Turan, Sarich, Chaykarakoyunlu and others, recognized on the basis of macroseismic investigations. Seismic focus mechanism was determined on the base of wideband digital record of seismic waves, registered by 35 telemetry stations. It has allowed to establish that the earthquakes, occurred in Oghuz region on September 4, at 4 h. 49 m. and on October 13, at 00h. 13 m., occurred due to similar compression and tention intensities. The type of main shock motion on both planes is left-lateral fault.

In this article, we describe and analyze the map of distribution of earthquakes' epicenters occurred and seismo-geological section of the Zagatala region, which are compiled based on the seismological data. An interpretation of focal mechanisms of the earthquakes in Zagatala and a mechanism of the Common Caucasian left-lateral strike-slip component was presented using a geodynamic model of a pair of right-lateral strike-slip. Based on digital seismograms of shear waves the amplitude spectra were constructed and dynamic source parameters for the Zagatala earthquake on May 7, 2012 were calculated.

The Gusar-Devechi zone is located in the southeastern part of the Great Caucasus range of mountains. The effect of seismotectonic processes on hydrocarbon deposits in the studied area was studied. It has been established that earthquake foci located in the area cause the migration of oil and gas deposits. On the basis of digital data, weak tremors were recorded without loss and it was determined that the area is characterized by weak seismicity. Shocks with magnitude ml≥ 3.0 are observed to coincide with Siyazan, Zangi-Gozluchay, Taircalchay-Salyan deep faults. Seismic activity is mainly observed in Shabran-Siyazan area.
