Excavations at Ovçular Tepesi (Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan). Second Preliminary Report: The 2009-2010 Seasons Anatolia antiqua. Eski Anadolu / Institut français d'études anatoliennes-Georges Dumézil /Cild: 19 /N: 1 səh: 53-100 Catherine Marro, Veli Bakhshaliyev, Safar Ashurov 86 2011 Important information relating to fundamental issues of … Important information relating to fundamental issues of Caucasian Late Prehistory was brought to light at Ovçular Tepesi during the last two excavation seasons. Of particular note are new and decisive data that address the perplexing relationships between Late Chalcolithic and Kuro-Araxes communities: far from succeeding one another in time, it now appears that these groups coexisted over several centuries at the end of the 5th Millennium BC Apart from being the earliest occurrence of Kuro-Araxes artefacts ever evidenced in the Caucasus and beyond, the recent discoveries from Ovçular Tepesi also reveal that cultural duality was at the core of regional dynamics in the Middle Araxes valley at a time of increasing socio-political complexity. This situation strongly recalls similar cases evidenced in Eastern Anatolia, albeit at a later date: during the 4th Millennium BC, coexistence between different cultural groups is … Daha çox

On the trail of Neolithic mice and men towards Transcaucasia: zooarchaeological clues from Nakhchivan (Azerbaijan) Biological Journal of the Linnean Society / Oxford University Press /Cild: 108 /N: 4 səh: 917-928 Catherine Marro, Rémi Berthon, Veli Bakhshaliyev, Thomas Cucchi, Zsófia Eszter Kovács, Annie Orth, François Bonhomme, Allowen Evin, Roohollah Siahsarvie, Jamshid Darvish 54 2013 Transcaucasia comprises a key region for understanding … Transcaucasia comprises a key region for understanding the history of both the hybrid zone between house mouse lineages and the dispersal of the Neolithic way of life outside its Near Eastern cradle. The opportunity to document the colonization history of both men and mice in Transcaucasia was made possible by the discovery of mouse remains accumulated in pits from a 6000-year-old farming village in the Nakhchivan (Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan). The present study investigated their taxonomy and most likely dispersal path through the identification of the Mus lineage to which they might belong using a geometric morphometric approach of dental traits distances between archaeological and modern populations of the different Mus lineages of South-West Asia. We demonstrate that the mouse remains trapped in the deep storage pits of the dwelling belong to the Mus musculus … Daha çox

On the edge of empire: 2008 and 2009 excavations at Oğlanqala, Azerbaijan American Journal of Archaeology / The University of Chicago Press /Cild: 116 /N: 2 səh: 321-362 Veli Bakhshaliyev, Safar Ashurov, Lauren Ristvet, Hilary Gopnik, Hannah Lau, Robert Bryant 51 2012 The nature of political complexity in the … The nature of political complexity in the Caucasus has emerged as a significant research question in Near Eastern archaeology. Until recently, archaeological developments in Azerbaijan have been left out of this discussion. Two seasons of survey and excavation undertaken by the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and the University of Pennsylvania at the Iron Age site of Oğlanqala in the Naxçıvan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan have begun to clarify the local origins of an Iron Age polity and its relationship to major Near Eastern empires, including Urartu, Achaemenid Persia, and Parthia. Situated in the northern half of the fertile Şərur Plain, Oğlanqala was in a position to control a pass through the Dərələyəz Mountains as well as the agricultural land of the plain. Indeed, in the Iron Age, the Şərur Plain was a complex landscape dominated by Oğlanqala but including at least six other fortresses and … Daha çox

On the genesis of the Kura-Araxes phenomenon: new evidence from Nakhchivan (Azerbaijan) Paléorient / CNRS Éditions səh: 131-154 Catherine Marro, Rémi Berthon, Veli Bakhshaliyev 44 2014 The formative processes of the Kura-Araxes cultural … The formative processes of the Kura-Araxes cultural complex, in particular the date and circumstances of its rise, have been debated for decades. This article takes advantage of the recent data retrieved from Ovçular Tepesi, a Late Chalcolithic settlement located in Nakhchivan by the Arpaçay river, to demonstrate that the earliest manifestation of the Kura-Araxes phenomenon should be dated back at least to the last quarter of the 5th millennium BC. More importantly, since the early Kura-Araxes pottery from Ovçular Tepesi was found within the Late Chalcolithic habitat together with buff-coloured Chaff-Faced Ware, we make use of technological and functional evidence to argue that the coexistence of Kura-Araxes and Chaff-Faced vessels corresponds to a multicultural settlement pattern, which involves two human communities that interact at the regional level. We then compare this pattern with later examples of … Daha çox

New light on the Late Prehistory of the South Caucasus: Data from the recent excavation campaigns at Kültepe I in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan (2012-2018) Paléorient. Revue pluridisciplinaire de préhistoire et de protohistoire de l’Asie du Sud-Ouest et de l’Asie centrale / CNRS Editions /N: 45-1 səh: 81-113 Catherine Marro, Rémi Berthon, Veli Bakhshaliyev, Judith Thomalsky 40 2019 This article discusses the results of a … This article discusses the results of a new round of excavations that have been carried out on the famous site of Kültepe I in Nakhchivan by a French-Azerbaijani team (2012-2018). After comparing the stratigraphy set up by the Soviet archaeologists during the 1950s with the occupation levels recently brought to light, the authors discuss the neolithisation processes of the Caucasus by comparing the data of Kültepe I with those of other Neolithic sites excavated in the Araxes or Kura basins: it appears that the adoption of a productive economy in the South Caucasus probably results from several events, including the migrations of peoples from Iran and Mesopotamia. The authors also analyse the data obtained from the Kura-Araxes levels, which, together with the assemblages collected by the Soviet archaeologists, show that the human group that settled at Kültepe I in the last quarter of the 4th millennium, is culturally distinct from those living in the vicinity, in particular from the group living at Kültepe II, where Late 4th millennium Kura-Araxes occupation levels are also attested. The Archaeology of Nakhichevan: Ten years of new discoveries book / Ege Yayınları Catherine Marro, Veli Bakhshaliyev 32 2009 The autonomous Republic of Nakhichevan, a province … The autonomous Republic of Nakhichevan, a province of Azerbaijan with a specific political status, is located in the middle Araxes basin along a major East-West axis, formerly known as the northern «Silk Road». Of particular importance during the Middle Ages, this road used to link India to Europe, via Tabriz, Erzurum and then Constantinople through the great Anatolian highway. Nakhichevan is thus located in one of the most strategic points of the South Caucasus, a region which played a major role in the history not only of Transcaucasia, but also of the Near and Middle East, Anatolia and the Mediterranean world. The Araxes valley has the shape of a wide corridor running from West to East, between the high peaks of the Lesser Caucasus to the North, the Zagros and the Oriental Taurus to the South. During the Lower Paleotithic, the Araxes valley probably had a central function in the migrations of hominids from … Daha çox

Archaeometallurgical investigations in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan: what does the evidence from Late Chalcolithic Ovçular Tepesi tell us about the beginning of extractive metallurgy? Journal of Field Archaeology / Routledge /Cild: 42 /N: 6 səh: 530-550 Catherine Marro, Veli Bakhshaliyev, Andreas Hauptmann, Nicolas Gailhard, Michael Bode 17 2017 The Late Chalcolithic (4400–3950 b.c.) occupation levels … The Late Chalcolithic (4400–3950 b.c.) occupation levels from Ovçular Tepesi have yielded a significant assemblage of copper objects and remains of copper production. Together with ore finds, two fragments of nozzle, crucible remains, and a number of small metal artifacts, this assemblage includes the unexpected discovery of three copper axes in an infant burial jar. These axes are the earliest examples of large copper tools known to date in southwestern Asia, whether it is in the Caucasus, Iran, or the Anatolian highlands. More importantly, the fact that these objects were locally produced suggests that significant metallurgical activities were being carried out at Ovçular as early as the second half of the 5th millennium b.c. After presenting the evidence from Ovçular Tepesi, this paper will proceed to a reassessment of the available archaeological and geochemical data concerning the emergence of extractive … Daha çox

Research in the Sadarak region has revealed numerous archaeological sites dating to various periods, while recent investigations at Neolithic and Chalcolithic settlements have provided important new information both on the early economic developments of Nakhchivan and its connections to the greater Ancient Near East. Until recently, Neolithic and Early Chal¬ colithic levels had only been excavated on the set¬ tlement site of Kultepe I. Archaeological researches in the settlement of Nakhchivan Tepe Amisos / Davut YİĞİTPAŞA /Cild: 3 /N: 4 səh: 40-66 Veli Bahshaliyev 5 2018 Existence of connections between the cultures of … Existence of connections between the cultures of South Caucasus and those of the Middle East (including Mesopotamia) has drawn the attention of researchers for many years. Researchers such as R.M. Munchayev, O.A. Abibullayev, I.G. Narimanov, T.I. Akhundov and others spoke about the spread and distribution of cultures of from Middle East in South Caucasus. Although the existence of these connections was sometimes demonstrated by single finds, now however these connections are demonstrated by a complex of archaeological materials. One suchmonument is the settlement of Nakhchivan Tepe which is characterized by Dalma Tepe ceramics. We consider that is necessary to introduce to the scientific community the fact that this cultural assemblage has been revealed for the first time in the South Caucasus, and also to define its place among the other Caucasian cultures. The ceramics can be divided into two periods, based on the stratigraphy of the settlement. However it should be noted that the two groups coincide to a certain degree in terms of the technology of production and ornamentation. The ceramics were mainly produced by the coil method, and the application of two layers of potter's clay to each other. The surfaces of some vessels were covered with a thin layer of clay. The research demonstrates that this was done in some cases to change the color, and in others, for ornament purposes. It is also possible to discuss the products ornamented with finger impressions, which are sometimes are executed inaccurately and mixed together. The study demonstrates that the finger impressions remained after being stuck in the thin … Daha çox

Genomes from Central Türkiye ~8000 BCE are genetically proximal to the domestic origins of sheep but do not fully explain the ancestry of later populations, suggesting a mosaic of wild ancestries. Genomic signatures indicate selection by ancient herders for pigmentation patterns, hornedness, and growth rate. Although the first European sheep flocks derive from Türkiye, in a notable parallel with ancient human genome discoveries, we detected a major influx of Western steppe–related ancestry in the Bronze Age.

Polysource procurement at Nakhchivan Tepe (Azerbaijan, Chalcolithic): first insights into the obsidian consumption patterns of a Dalma site recently discovered in the Southern … International Obsidian Conference / Hungarian National Museum /Cild: 14 səh: 121-132 Catherine Marro, Rémi Berthon, Veli Bakhshaliyev, Marie Orange, François-Xavier Le Bourdonnec 4 2019 Obsidian sourcing studies in the Caucasus have … Obsidian sourcing studies in the Caucasus have long focused on the modern Armenian territory, at the expense of other areas. Although excavation campaigns are multiplying in Western Azerbaijan, thus completing our knowledge of the prehistoric populations of the region, few data are available on the obsidian consumption patterns of Nakhchivan, an autonomous republic part of Azerbaijan that is landlocked between Armenia, Turkey, and Iran. This small region of 5,500 km2 is however of prime interest for the reconstitution of past trade networks, given its strategic location at the crossroads of north-south and east-west circulation axes and its well-known copper deposits, rich summer pastures, and numerous water sources. Understanding the raw material consumption patterns in this region seems essential if we are to grasp the broader economic processes that existed in the Caucasus between the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. This is one of the aims of two recent research projects conducted in the region: PAST-OBS (LaScArBx LabEx, dir. F.-X. Le Bourdonnec) and SCOPE (University of New England, dir. M. Orange). In this paper, we focus on one particular site, Nakhchivan Tepe, which is located in a strategic position not far from the confluence of the Naxçivançay and the Araxes rivers: the evidence suggests that this site may have had a specific function in the trade networks of the Chalcolithic period.

A Multi-Directional Bridge? The Geo-Strategic Significance of Nakhchivan during the Late Chalcolithic (4500–3500 BCE) Caucasus Conference / Schnell & Steiner /Cild: 34 səh: 15-30 Catherine Marro, Veli Bakhshaliyev, Marie Orange, François-Xavier Le Bourdonnec 3 2018 Mesopotamia and the pastoral-based, hierarchical communities of … Mesopotamia and the pastoral-based, hierarchical communities of the Eurasian steppes. Renowned for its wealth in natural resources, it has recently been envisaged as a potential bridge transmitting goods and knowledge between Eurasia and the Near East. This paper summarizes the cultural evolution of the South Caucasus between ca. 6200 and 3500 BCE with a view towards emphasizing its geo-strategic position during the Late Chalcolithic period (ca. 4500–3500 BCE). From a secluded region bypassed by major circulation routes during the Neolithic, the South Caucasus evolved into a kind of economic hub, as shown by a remarkable increase in the number of settlements belonging to the Chalcolithic, many of which display evident links with Mesopotamia, Iran or the Black Sea region. This striking evolution probably stems from the rise of extractive metallurgy, which developed in the Caucasus some time during the 5th millennium BCE. Drawing on the evidence that has been collected in Nakhchivan over the past 15 years, in particular on the obsidian circulation networks, we argue that the exchange of goods and knowledge during the Chalcolithic was in the hands of mobile pastoral groups, which resulted into a chain of interconnected networks of varying extents. According to this scenario, the circulation units at the beginning of the larger, interregional networks did not necessarily have any contact with the end-line. From the available evidence, the South Caucasus during the Late Chalcolithic appears to have been a kind of hub, a central place where different communities met and interacted: this is particularly visible in Nakhchivan … Daha çox

Agropastoralism in middle Bronze through early Iron Age Naxçıvan: zooarchaeological and paleoethnobotanical data from Qızqala Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports / Elsevier /Cild: 33 səh: 102535 Veli Bakhshaliyev, Hilary Gopnik, Hannah Lau, Lucas Proctor 4 2020 Excavations at the site of Qızqala in … Excavations at the site of Qızqala in the Şərur Rayon of Azerbaijan’s Autonomous Republic of Naxçıvan have yielded evidence of a fortified settlement occupied from the Middle Bronze through the Early Iron Ages (2500–800 BCE), as well as a rich mortuary landscape of monumental kurgan burials dating to the Middle Bronze Age. This study describes the combined faunal and macrobotanical evidence for agropastoral production from the settlement at Qızqala and from animal offerings incorporated into nearby contemporaneous mortuary contexts. Such data provide a unique opportunity to elucidate the underlying subsistence system supporting the inhabitants at Qızqala, and to compare this system with the choices ancient people made when interring their dead in the nearby kurgans. While this dataset is modest, our goal is to integrate both plant and animal data stemming from different types of social practices in … Daha çox

To clarify the issue the French-Azerbaijani expedition resumed archaeological excavations at the settlement of Kultepe I in 2012-2018. New data have been partially presented in some articles, but have not been published in full. Comparison of archaeological materials obtained during the Soviet period (excavations by O.A. Abibullayev) with the results of the last decade makes it possible to conclude that the Kultepe culture was formed on the local soil in close contact with neighbouring Middle Eastern regions. Archaeological investigations at Nakhchivan Tepe On salt, copper and gold: the origins of early mining and metallurgy in the Caucasus. Archéologie (s) /Cild: 5 səh: 375-386 Veli Bakhshaliyev 3 2021 The recent investigations carried out at Nakhchivan … The recent investigations carried out at Nakhchivan Tepe, a flat site located on the right bank of the Nakhchivançay river close to the modern city of Nakhchivan, have brought to light the remains of a settlement dating back to the early 5th millennium BCE, which clearly belong to the Dalma cultural horizon: buff ware decorated with coarse finger impressions is attested together with stamp-decorated and painted ware, all of which were so far known only from the Urmiah basin and the Zagros mountains in Iran. The discovery of copper ore in the occupation layers, together with the predominance of obsidian from Syunik in the lithic industry, suggest that these groups would go through Nakhchivan to obtain the raw materials essential to their living from the Zangezur mountain ranges. Migrations, Mobility and Innovations: interpreting change between the Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age in the South Caucasus and Northern Iran (ca. 6200-2400 BCE) Catherine Marro, Veli Bakhshaliyev, Nicolas Frerebeau, Marie Orange, Julien Le Guirriec-Cornu, Fanny Alloteau, Akbar Abedi, Ayed Ben Amara, François-Xavier Le Bourdonnec 0 2024 The Chalcolithic period (ca. 4900-3500 BC) is … The Chalcolithic period (ca. 4900-3500 BC) is marked by the progressive development of an interaction sphere that included the Caucasus, Eastern Anatolia, North Mesopotamian, the northern Levant and North-west Iran. This interaction sphere, which has been called the Chaff-Faced Ware oikumene (Marro 2010, 2012), may be described as a period of increasing mobility between the communities living in the lowlands (Mesopotamia and northern Syria) or around lake Urmiah in Iran, and human groups living in the highlands of Eastern Anatolia and the Caucasus. This paper will draw on the cross-analysis of two series of artefacts: 1° the geochemical and petrographic data obtained from Chalcolithic painted potsherds collected on the settlements of Uçan Agil (Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan) and Dalma Tepe (Iran), in order to assess the relationships between the two sites. 2° the geochemical data from a series of obsidian artefacts collected on a dozen sites located in Nakhchivan and North-western Iran. From the distribution patterns of these two classes of artefacts, we will examine the conclusions that may be reached on the development of circulation networks between Iran and the South Caucasus, and their implications for interpreting the mobility patterns during the Chalcolithic. It can be assumed that the area of formation of Dalma Tepe culture covered the territories of Nakhchivan and the basin of Lake Urmia. Research shows that the Nakhchivan Tepe settlement was part of the area of Dalma Tepe culture formation. Looking north: first insights into the consumption of obsidian from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age in Nakhchivan 11th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East Catherine Marro, Rémi Berthon, Veli Bakhshaliyev, Marie Orange, François-Xavier Le Bourdonnec, Judith Thomalsky 0 2018 As part of the PAST-OBS research project … As part of the PAST-OBS research project (a research program supported by the ANR [ANR-10-LABX-52]), which aims to investigate the complex relationships between the exploitation of natural resources, technological innovations, and nomadic pastoralists in the Urmiah (northern Iran) and Sirab (Nakhchivan) regions between the 6th and the 3rd millennium B.C., more than 1500 obsidian artefacts have so far been geochemically characterized. These results were obtained thanks to an analytical strategy that was specifically adapted to these assemblages: it relies on several analytical methods, mainly a portable XRF (pXRF; used both in the field and in the lab), and the use of the Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS; complementary to pXRF). These artefacts originate from no less than nine archaeological sites that are all located in Nakhchivan (Azerbaijan): the excavated settlements of Kültepe I, Nakhchivan Tepe, Ovçular Tepesi, Uçan Agil, and Sorşu, as well as the surveyed sites of Bûlôv qayasi, Çay Aǧzi, Kolani, and Mesmeliagil. Altogether, these assemblages cover a long period of time - from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age (Kura-Araxes), which makes possible synchronic and diachronic comparisons: an overview of the obsidian economies of these regions and their evolution through time is now available. This paper will be an opportunity for us to present the first results of the PAST-OBS research project, and to discuss further possible research prospects. Daha çox

NEW NEOLITHIC AND CHALCOLITHIC SITES IN NAKHCHIVAN (AZERBAIJAN) PROBLEMS OF EARLY METAL AGE ARCHAEOLOGY OF CAUCASUS AND ANATOLIA səh: 17 Veli Bakhshaliyev 0 2014 The south and southwestern limit of Nakhchivan’s … The south and southwestern limit of Nakhchivan’s territory is the Araxes River, one of the major rivers of the Caucasus. Neolithic and Chalcolithic archaeological sites are generally located on tributaries of the Araxes River, such as the Nakhchivanchay and the Arpachay. Very few Chalcolithic sites have been excavated to date. Moreover, the Neolithic presents only at the Kultepe I settlement, where the bottom layer can be dated to the Neolithic period. The same site has the earliest Chalcolithic material found so far in this territory. However the research conducted by us in 2010-2014 in the neighborhood of the settlement to Kultepe I, revealed more than twenty monuments1. Our results demonstrate that the earliest agricultural settlements in Nakhchivan’s territory have not yet received enough study. These sites are generally located in the valley of the Sirabchay River, which is a tributary to the Nakhchivanchay. Research indicates that many sites date to the late Neolithic and early Chalcolithic. Additionally, we noted the remains of copper, stone, and clay molds in some settlements (Marro et al. 2011: 70), which testifies to the development of copper metallurgy during the Chalcolithic Age, as these settlements were not inhabited after this period. These settlements, which extended along the river Sirabchay and its tributaries, were probably founded to exploit the natural resources of this region. Along the Nakhchivanchay, Dzhagrichay, and Sirabchay wild cereals grow today naturally (Абибуллаев 1982: 206; Мустафаев 1961: 56). Moreover, the Nakhchivanchay valley is home to a large number of wild plants, which are now cultivated. Additionally …

Araştırmalar, Azerbaycan’ın Geç Kalkolitik Kültürü’nün kendine has özellikleri olduğunu, burada “Ovçular Tepe Kültürü” ile “Leyla Tepe Kültürü”nün oluştuğunu göstermiştir. Researchers such as RM Munchayev1, OA Abibullayev2, IG Narimanov3, TI Akhundov4 and others spoke about the spread and distribution of cultures of from Middle East in South Caucasus. Although the existence of these connections was sometimes demonstrated by single finds, now however these connections are demonstrated by a complex of archaeological materials. One such monument is the settlement of Nakhchivan Tepe which is characterized by Dalma Tepe ceramics. We consider that is necessary to introduce to the scientific community the fact that this cultural assemblage has been revealed for the first time in the South Caucasus, and also to define its place among the other Caucasian cultures. AN UBAID SETTLEMENT IN THE SOUTH CAUCASUS–BÜLÖVKAYA (NAKHCHİVAN, AZERBAIJAN) Amisos / Davut YİĞİTPAŞA /Cild: 10 /N: 18 səh: 13-32 Veli Bahshaliyev, Nezahat Ceylan, Elmar Bakhshaliyev, Heyran Hasanova, Ziniyet Memmedova 0 2025 The discovery of samples of material culture … The discovery of samples of material culture associated with Mesopotamia in the South Caucasus raised great debate among scholarly community. Some group of scholar’s claim that traces of Mesopotamian cultures in the South Caucasus link to economic and cultural relationship, and whereas others see this spread of Mesopotamian cultures the result of migration. Newly discovered pottery from Bülövkaya provides new insight into the relationship between the South Caucasus and Northern Mesopotamia. Research shows that painted and simple ceramics from the Bülövkaya settlement can be considered a local variant of the Ubaid culture. The results of the study show that the Ubaid tribes moved north and settled in the territory of Nakhchivan in the first half of the 5th millennium. The movement of the Ubaid tribes to the north was associated with the rich deposits of raw materials of the South Caucasus, especially deposits of obsidian and copper, as well as abundant pastures. The problem of distribution of Sioni type pottery in the South Caucasus in the context of archaeological excavations in the Tumbultepe settlement Rossijskaâ arheologiâ /N: 1 səh: 21-36 VB Bakhshaliyev, Elmar Bakhshaliyev, Heyran Hasanova, Nazahat Ceylan 0 2025 Many Caucasian scholars give a general name … Many Caucasian scholars give a general name to the Late Chalcolithic culture of the South Caucasus: it is sometimes referred to as the Sioni culture, sometimes as the Sioni-Tsopi culture, sometimes as the Sioni ceramics, and sometimes as the Sioni-Tsopi-Ginchi culture. However, Sioni type pottery is very rare in the settlements of Nakhchivan. The study of material and cultural samples, especially the pottery from the newly excavated settlement of Tumbultepe and other sites of Nakhchivan, is vitally important for clarifying issues related to the Late Chalcolithic cultures of the South Caucasus, including the Sioni culture. Even if it is possible to refer to a group of Late Chalcolithic sites in the South Caucasus as to the Sioni-Tsopi-Ginchi culture, the authors believe it is not correct to attribute this to all the sites of the South Caucasus.
