At the end of the 19th century …
At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Japan gained economic and military fame on a world scale. However, the country's defeat in World War II destroyed the existing ideals in all areas of the country. Integration into the world, global culture confronted the Japanese people, who have long remained true to their past values, with the new world. Japan's cultural diversity after World War II, its apology for aggression in its military history, and the collision of globalization and traditionalism have created serious problems in the understanding of national identity. As a result of all this, postmodern thought came to the fore in Japanese literature.

Haruki Murakami, as one of the most …
Haruki Murakami, as one of the most prominent representatives of postmodern literature, portrays the complexity of the postmodern era and the inner world of the individual in a distinctive way. The postmodern era is characterized by the collapse of grand narratives, the weakening of stable ideologies and systems. In this period, individuals distance themselves from the previously existing social and cultural frameworks and search for a new place for themselves. Murakami skillfully describes the internal and external struggles his protagonists face in their quest to find their identity and understand their existence. In Murakami's works, the individual struggles with the various roles society imposes on them, but this struggle often leads to feelings of loneliness and alienation. At times, Murakami uses questions about parallel worlds and reality to illuminate the relativism of the individual's existence. In the postmodern world, identity is not fixed and must be constantly reconstructed. The obstacles the individual faces in finding their identity are not only those imposed by societal norms but also the uncertainties within their own internal world.
